Cung Le and Flores
Over the past year Pierre Francois Flores has said some pretty ridiculous things in the media, but recently his delusions have reached new heights. Self proclaimed “fighter” Flores has issued challenges to former world champion Cung Le. Initially Mr. Le entertained some back and forth in the press and on social media. However once reality set in the idea of a professional athlete and world champion fighting a recreational martial arts hobbyist seemed irresponsible and raised some red flags.
Would any reasonable person ask to fight Mike Tyson? Or Stipe Micocic? The answer for 90% of the world’s population is a astounding HELL NO. Yet “Flores” is eager to fight Cung Le, a man who’s kicks could make you crap yourself from a glancing blow. Pierre would occupy the 10% of the population who would agree to fight such a scary opponent. My guess is that 10% would consist of champion grade athletes or someone with a mental illness or strong delusions of grander. I see no evidence Pierre is a world class athlete or martial artist. After viewing his “fight” videos it became abundantly clear this is a quick path to inflicting unnecessary pain and suffering on a human who is ill equip to detect the limitations of reality. As you can see in the video below Flores demonstrates the skill of a recreational martial artist and not that of an elite warrior ready for UFC or Bellator.
Keeping it real
Any reasonable person would not advocate for a professional athlete to beat the crap out of a non combatant or inexperienced martial artist. After viewing the difference in skill sets I think people engaged in this need to push for no fight. Sometimes as a fellow martial artist we need to protect each other and let people know if they are having unsafe ideas and concepts in relation to their fighting ability. There is no reason for Flores to be gravely injured and no reason for a well respected martial artist such as Cung Le to fight Flores as a hoodlum in the streets. Yes I said in the streets… Flores challenge was no gloves, no rules and so on. This most certainly would end in Pierre needing medical intervention and only to make Mr. Le look like a gangster fighting in the streets. If Flores wants the honor of fighting a former champion he needs to ensure his medical and mental health and earn it like everyone else. I’d recommend a one off fight in Bellator but no state commission would allow such a spectacle.
Team Le responds
After seeing all the ridiculousness floating around about this “dispute”, I decided to reach out directly to Team Le. I voiced my concerns about fighter safety and was pleasantly surprised to see Cung, and his wife Suzanne, concerned as well despite a year of harassment by Flores and his associates. They were kind enough to give me a statement. Check it out below.
“Suzanne and I had a moment to discuss the media frenzy and it has become clear Flores needs psychiatric intervention. While I have participated in the back and forth soap opera drama, I need to clearly communicate that NO ONE in their right mind would street fight a professional fighter. It would be irresponsible and unethical for me to actually engage my skill set with a person who clearly is not at my level. We hope he gets the help he needs.” – Cung Le
